Congressman Higgins Attends Ribbon Cutting for New Burchfield-Penney Art Center
September 5, 2008

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined elected, art and education leaders to cut the ribbon on the new Burchfield-Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College. The new 75,000 square foot museum is located on a 4.9 acre site at the corner of Elmwood and Rockwell.

“This is an exciting opportunity to expand upon a facility with a history unique to Western New York in a Buffalo neighborhood and business district which is home to a rich array of art and cultural venues,” said Congressman Higgins.

Congressman Higgins helped to secure $650,000 in federal FY 2006 and FY 2008 funding for this project.  The total project cost for the museum is $30 million and was expected to generate 560 jobs and have a $54 million economic impact during its construction phase.

Burchfield-Penney is a museum dedicated to the art and vision of Buffalo artist Charles E. Burchfield, known for his watercolor interpretations depicting life and nature.  Charles Burchfield inspired the creation of the original museum at Buffalo State College in 1966

Burchfield-Penney closed its Rockwell Hall galleries on Sunday, March 2 in preparation for its move to the new museum building.  The new museum will open to the public on November 22nd.
