Congressman Higgins Announces Grant Opportunities for Fire and EMS Companies
May 12, 2008

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that the Department of Homeland Security will begin accepting applications for federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) Grants on May 27, 2008.   SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing their ability to ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards.  This year Congress appropriated $190 million for the SAFER program.

Western New York’s volunteer and career firefighters play an essential role in homeland and community protection,” said Congressman Higgins.  “I encourage local first responders to take advantage of this opportunity to apply for resources which can assist with recruitment and retention efforts.”

The Program Guidance document for FY2008 SAFTER grants is now available on the Department of Homeland Security website for the Assistance to Firefighters program at www.firegrantsupport.com.  The website also provides information on program priorities, frequently asked questions, and an applicant tutorial.  The deadline for receipt of the SAFER Grant applications will be 5:00 p.m. on June 27, 2008.

Applicants with questions can contact the SAFER grant help desk at 1-866-274-0960 or firegrants@dhs.gov.  For more information or assistance feel free to contact Congressman Higgins’ office at 716-852-3501.
