Higgins Announces $34,000 HUD Grant for Jamestown Housing Authority
January 8, 2008

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that the Jamestown Housing Authority will receive a federal grant in the amount of $34,000 from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“This funding will be used toward implementation of a plan that provides struggling families in the Jamestown area with the tools to get back on their feet,” said Congressman Higgins.

The Jamestown Housing Authority has been awarded the grant under the Housing Choice Voucher – Family Self Sufficiency (FSS8) Program.  Family self-sufficiency (FSS) is a HUD program that encourages communities to develop local strategies to help voucher families obtain employment that will lead to economic independence. Participants sign a contract, which must be completed within five years, with individualized goals on a path to self sufficiency.  Public housing agencies work with social service agencies, schools, businesses, and other local partners to develop a comprehensive program that gives participating FSS family members the skills and experience to enable them to obtain employment that pays a living wage.
