Today we are calling on the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) to reaffirm and return to the history-based build-out of the Commercial Slip and Historic Street Plan consistent with the 2004 Master Plan. It is imperative that staff be directed to deliver a date specific plan for the completion and source of funding for each project element and enter into all necessary contracts to build-out the Erie Canal Harbor Project.
As Bass Pro reconsiders its site location away from the Central Wharf, let’s get to work on implementing the vision of the Erie Canal Harbor as a dynamic, year-round site that celebrates Buffalo’s local history and role in our nation’s growth and development by building those elements that will attract both residents and visitors alike, including, but not limited to:
· Installation of the 400 foot long, 45 feet wide wooden boardwalk that will recall the historic character and location of the wood wharf.
· Rebuilding of the five historic streets (Commercial, Lloyd, Hanover, Prime, Perry) utilizing sandstone sidewalks and curbs and restored/replicated cobblestone routes.
· Continued design and installation of site furnishings (railings, benches, light fixtures, bollards) in keeping with features visible in historic photographs and drawings.
· Design images and information into the fabric of the construction using interpretive elements such as bronze medallions, wood planks, railings and brick walls.
We believe this build-out will better anchor the substantial investments already made at the water’s edge and add greater support to the increased economic development opportunities bring made available through the remediation and rebuilding at the former Aud site, Webster block, Donovan building and the DL&W Terminal.
