Washington, DC—This week Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27), a member of the House Ad-Hoc Committee for Irish Affairs, met with Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness, along with 17 of his House colleagues. The meeting focused on the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) finding that the IRA has decommissioned all its weapons. Higgins heard from the Sinn Féin leader about the ongoing developments towards a real and lasting peace in Ireland.
“The developments out of Ireland this week continue to be positive and promising for an enduring peace in Ireland,” said Higgins. “I urge the DUP to accept and trust the findings of the IICD, which has found that the IRA has made good on its promise to decommission its weapons, and begin negotiations to restore a power-sharing regional government in Northern Ireland.”
In July, the IRA announced that it was ordering an end to its armed campaign and instructing all members to pursue objectives exclusively through peaceful means and to disengage in any other activities whatsoever. All IRA units were ordered to dump arms, and the IRA said it would work to put its arms beyond use as quickly as possible, making sure it would be verified by international monitors and two witnesses from the Protestant and Catholic clergy. This past Monday, the IICD announced that the IRA had fully decommissioned all of its weapons.
