Higgins Statement on BRAC Decision to Keep Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Closure List
August 25, 2005

Buffalo, NY—Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) released the following statement regarding the decision by the eight member panel of BRAC to keep the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS) on the closure list.

“This is a sad day for Western New York.  The impact this closure will make is simply devastating.  Thousands of hard working people will lose their jobs, including those employed at the base and those who provide support for the base itself.  In addition, because of our proximity to the Northern Border and the real threat of terror we in Western New York know and face, our security could be threatened.  Despite all the strong community and political support, and the unalienable facts of the base’s worth, this panel has regrettably decided against us.  I will follow this to the next step and I call on the Western New York congressional delegation to unite in taking our grave concerns to President Bush, make our voices heard clearly and fighting to the end to keep this base open,” said Congressman Higgins.
