In Meeting with TSA, Higgins Demands Full Explanation of Adams’ Delay at Dulles on St. Patrick’s Day; TSA Confirms Adams Removed from “Watch List”
March 28, 2006
Washington, DC—Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) hosted a meeting in his office with representatives of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and members of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Irish Affairs to discuss Gerry Adams’ St. Patrick’s Day delay at Dulles International Airport in Washington.  This meeting follows a letter Higgins and the Ad-Hoc Committee sent to TSA Director Kip Hawley, demanding an explanation as to why Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams was detained at Dulles International Airport en route to Buffalo, NY to join Higgins in St. Patrick’s Day festivities there.  TSA officials confirmed in the meeting that Adams had been on a “selectee” list requiring extra scrutiny at the airport, and today had been removed.

“Today, TSA needed to explain to my colleagues and me why Gerry Adams, a recognized political leader and crucial to the decommissioning of the IRA, would be delayed and prevented from traveling to Buffalo on St. Patrick’s Day,” said Higgins.  “TSA, which maintains the list and relays the information to individual airlines, confirmed today that Gerry’s name has been removed from the watch list for individuals requiring extra security.  This matter is not closed; I will persist until Sinn Fein staff, those who have become instrumental in the movement towards peace and the implementation of the Good Friday Accords, are removed as well.  I thank TSA for their hard work and responsiveness thus far.”
