Higgins Opposes DR-CAFTA Free Trade Agreement
April 27, 2005
Would Cause Lose-Lose Economics

Washington, DC—Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) released the following statement in opposition to the DR-CAFTA Free Trade Agreement.

“The United States-Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) is an expansion of broken policy that threatens workers and families in developed and developing countries alike.  By lowering barriers to trade without simultaneously raising production standards, this agreement would take advantage of a region in need of fair, sustainable growth to absolve corporations of their responsibilities to employees and the environment.

“I am proud to come from a family that boasts a rich history of organized labor.  I believe that workers around the world have the right to earn an honest wage for their honest work.  I do not support CAFTA because through it, our nation will turn its back on its tradition of win-win growth through strong employee-management relations.  CAFTA would cause lose-lose economics where workers’ voices are silenced, natural environments are destroyed, and Americans lose their jobs,” said Congressman Higgins.
