Adams Detained at Washington Airport on St. Patrick’s Day En Route to Buffalo, NY
Washington, DC—Today, Congressman Brian Higgins along with Congressmen Peter King (R-NY), Joseph Crowley (D-NY), Jim Walsh (R-NY), Richard Neal (D-MA) and John Sweeney (R-NY), members of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Irish Affairs in the House of Representatives, sent a letter to Transportation Security Administration Director Kip Hawley, demanding an explanation as to why Sinn Fein’s Gerry Adams was detained and held up at Dulles International Airport on Friday evening en route to Buffalo, NY to join Higgins in St. Patrick’s Day festivities there.
“It is shameful that Gerry Adams, a recognized political leader and crucial to the decommissioning of the IRA would be restricted when traveling domestically in the U.S.,” said Higgins. “It is unacceptable that a few hours earlier, Gerry was a guest in the White House for a meeting with President Bush, and then delayed by airport security at Dulles a few hours later. This Administration is serving as an impediment to the good and serious work that Sinn Fein is doing in moving forward the peace process and it is a disgrace to the efforts of creating a real and lasting peace in Ireland.”
