|Congressman Higgins Announces $316,800 For Firefighter Recruitment in Evans & West Falls|
|November 2, 2005|
Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company and West Falls Volunteer Fire Company will receive a combined total of $316,800 in federal funding in the 2nd round of 2005 grant disbursement for the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program (AFGP), Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER).
“While the number of volunteer firefighters in Erie County is declining, our need for dedicated and trained first responders is increasing,” said Congressman Higgins. “These federal resources will play a vital role in meeting the critical need for new volunteers.”
SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing their ability to ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards. Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company will receive $48,800 and West Falls Volunteer Fire Company will receive $268,000 through the Recruitment & Retention Grant, which provides up to four years of financial assistance to create a net increase in the number of competent firefighters who are trained, certified, and capable of responding to emergencies likely to occur within the fire department’s geographic response area.
In March of this year, Congressman Higgins’ office held a fire grant workshop at the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department, where assistance was given to local fire departments in completing grant applications for this AFGP funding.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness (SLGCP) administers the program, in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. Nearly 3,000 applications totaling $2.9 billion were submitted this year.
