The Lackawanna site was on a U.S. Postal Service list of offices slated for closure released on August 3, 2009. Congressman Higgins was a constant and vocal advocate in the fight to keep the Lackawanna office open.

Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives in approving the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act (H.R. 3791). Congressman Higgins is an original cosponsor of this legislation and a strong supporter of the program which has delivered $13.164 million dollars to fire departments in his district over the last 5 years.

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced the application window for grants provided through the Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) program is now open. SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing a department’s ability to ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards. This year Congress appropriated approximately $210 million for the SAFER program.

At the conclusion of Veterans’ Week, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) presented Stephen Skowron with the six medals he earned for his service and bravery during World War II. Mr. Skowron, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 through 1946, received the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign with three bronze stars, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia Clasp, Discharge Button and Honorable Service Lapel Pin. Mr. Skowron resides in South Buffalo.

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in town conducting work in the Dunkirk Harbor.  The project is funded with $820,000 through the Recovery Act and $376,000 secured by Congressman Higgins in the House Energy and Water bill.

 Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined local veterans in Chautauqua County for a ceremony recognizing those who served and those who are currently serving this nation.  The Congressman presented Sheridan VFW Post 6390 with a flag flown over the United States Capitol during the event.

In a pre-Veterans’ Day celebration, surrounded by friends and family, Michael Militello was presented with several military medals, including the esteemed Purple Heart, for his contributions while serving in Vietnam. Congressmembers Brian Higgins and Chris Lee formally presented the medals to the local veteran and restaurateur.
