Statement by Congressman Higgins on the President’s Directive to Stop COVID Package Negotiations
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s tweet indicating he has instructed his team to stop any discussions about providing Americans and communities with COVID relief until after the election.
“The President doesn’t get it and clearly never will. The risk to our country's livelihood because of the pandemic - which has already cost over 200 thousand American lives - continues to intensify. This nation is in crisis; people are out of work, businesses are afraid they may have to close, towns and cities are facing major budget holes, and most critically American lives are in jeopardy. This isn’t a game and the American people are not political pawns. The President’s actions to ignore the crisis before him and instead focus on his reelection is a total failure of his responsibilities and an abandonment of the American people.”
Congressman Higgins supported and the House of Representatives approved an updated Heroes Act last week which provides $2.2 trillion to address the urgent needs of the health and economic crisis before us, including direct payments to individuals, state and local aid, additional assistance for small businesses and new funding to expand testing and tracing of COVID-19.
