Statement by Congressman Higgins on President Trump’s National Emergency Declaration
“This Presidential declaration for what amounts to a non-emergency is an unnecessary and unproductive means to address concerns at our border. This action motivated purely by politics represents an overreach by President Trump that erodes our democracy’s Constitutional foundation and disrespects our balance of powers.
“An Emergency Authorization is a serious matter, yet the President’s announcement amounted to a rambling mess that lacked any focus or discipline deserving of such a momentous measure. Make no mistake, this declaration takes billions of dollars from our military and billions more from the fight against drugs. Furthermore, it could take tens of millions of dollars from Western New York projects and the jobs those projects support and diverts $8 billion from the federal budget that could be directed to building our infrastructure, educating our children or curing disease.”
“This chaos is a disservice to the American people and economy.”
