Statement by Congressman Brian Higgins

Jul 22, 2014
Press Release

“Today’s discussion about transporting people between the inner and outer harbors is a welcome one resulting from the significant transformation of Buffalo’s waterfront.  The Buffalo waterfront saw its first public water-based transportation with the debut of the Queen City Ferry in 2011, and continued dialogue about public access to the water is timely. I applaud the New York Power Authority for responding to an effort for expanded ferry service we initiated two years ago and are pleased it is now moving forward thanks to willing partnerships and new public demand.”

“While the new ferry will provide people with an efficient alternative to traveling between the two harbors, the most effective way to transport vehicles as we continue to build on our waterfront resurgence remains the proposed Buffalo Harbor Bridge.”

“With the required Environmental Impact Statement near completion, the bridge becomes the shovel-ready solution to providing year-round, timely passage of vehicles across the water.  Transportation must be a forethought as we continue to build out the inner and outer harbors.  Construction of the Harbor Bridge and removal of the Buffalo Skyway should remain a part of that vision.”
