Progress on the Robert Moses Parkway is Long Overdue but NYPA Has the Responsibility & Capacity to Fund the Project

May 7, 2013
Press Release
Statement by Congressman Brian Higgins

“The Robert Moses Parkway is a physical and economic barrier to reconnecting Niagara Falls with its waterfront and the State’s commitment of action on this project is momentous and long-awaited.  Niagara Falls is a majestic national treasure, deserving of serious attention and a redefined welcome mat for the millions of visitors is critical to our region’s future.
“Nevertheless, diverting scarce state or federal resources to fund this project is letting the New York Power Authority off the hook.  It is a historical fact that NYPA owns the infrastructure; consequently NYPA owns the responsibility to fix this.  Since the 1960’s the City of Niagara Falls has shouldered the negative impact of NYPA’s actions to build the Robert Moses Parkway.  It cut off the city from its namesake falls and with it cut off economic growth.  NYPA has an obligation and capacity to right this historic wrong.   In addition, freeing up funding from government sources provides an opportunity to maximize impact by redirecting these critical dollars into additional investments in Niagara Falls.
“Niagara Falls was shortchanged in the past and I am here to do everything I can to fight to see that never happens again.”
