Higgins Statement in Response to NFTA Board Meeting Announcement of Action on DL&W Site

Feb 28, 2013
Press Release

“Today’s meeting of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Board drew thoughtful discussion about the future transportation needs in downtown Buffalo.  I commend Chairman Howard Zemsky and Executive Director Kim Minkel’s announcement that the NFTA will prepare a scope of work for a feasibility study regarding the future of the DL& W site and Metro Events Station.

“There is new confidence, interest and energy in downtown Buffalo, driven by a number of exciting developments stretching from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus to Canalside and spots in between.  Growth of the BNMC is expected to bring 17,000 daily visitors to the campus in a few short years and development at Canalside has grown the waterfront site from zero visitors to 600,000 annual visitors in just 5 years.

“Today downtown Buffalo is seeing $700 million in construction and with plans for HARBORcenter, UB Medical School and Roswell Park Cancer Institute expansion, there is much more to come.  We need to look at how we prepare for the success underway and meet the needs of the increased critical mass downtown in the years ahead.  These are good challenges to have and I look forward to working with the NFTA and other community partners to address these matters.”
On February 15, 2013 Congressman Higgins sent a letter to NFTA Executive Director Minkel and Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation Executive Director Tom Dee, asking the agencies to partner to advance the development of DL&W.
