Press Release

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority has been awarded a $294,000 federal grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation for the purchase of a hybrid bus.

“By replacing older, less efficient forms of transportation with newer technology we reduce costs, reduce our use of fossil fuel and reduce emissions leading to a better, cleaner community,” said Congressman Higgins.

Henry M. Sloma, NFTA Acting Chairman said, "We are very appreciative of Congressman Higgins' efforts. This funding comes at a critical time for Metro as we work to retire older buses and replace them with environmentally friendly, fuel efficient hybrids."

NFTA Metro carries about 94,000 people a day and operates a fleet of over 330 busses.  The NFTA estimates a 25% to 30% reduction in fuel based on the efficiencies of the hybrid. Savings are realized from decreased maintenance costs associated with the new hybrid bus.
