Press Release
Program Provides Childcare to Veterans Attending Medical Appointments at the VA

Kids Korner at the Buffalo VA Medical Center is one step closer to renewal thanks to approval of legislation announced by Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26).   The program offers free childcare to veterans visiting the VA Western New York Healthcare System for health and mental health appointments.

“Kids Korner meets a need among veteran parents and grandparent caregivers who in increasing numbers are finding access to childcare as a barrier to meeting their own healthcare needs,” said Congressman Higgins.

A one year extension of Western New York’s Kids Korner program was included in the Department of Veterans Affairs Expiring Authorities Act of 2016 (H.R. 5985) approved by the House of Representatives this week.

Kids Korner opened at the Buffalo VA in 2011 as one of three pilot projects nationwide to provide child care services to veterans.  Originally set to expire in September of 2013, Higgins fought the proposed closure of the program in 2013 and has led the push for the extension of Kids Korner every year since.
