Higgins Announces $2.52 Million for Hybrid Buses

Jul 14, 2009
Press Release

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) will receive $2.52 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the purchase of seven hybrid-electric buses.  This is in addition to a $294,000 federal grant for a hybrid bus awarded in June.

“Through the transition of the NFTA fleet to more fuel efficient vehicles we see fuel savings that help keep fares affordable for passengers and reduced emissions that improve the air quality in our community,” said Congressman Higgins.

This federal funding was provided through the Federal Transit Administration’s Clean Fuels Grant Program. Through this grant seven 40 foot hybrid electric busses will replace seven life-expired diesel busses operating in the NFTA’s service area.

NFTA Metro carries about 94,000 people a day and operates a fleet of over 330 busses.  The NFTA estimates a 25% to 30% reduction in fuel based on the efficiencies of the hybrid. Savings are also realized from decreased maintenance costs associated with the new hybrid buses.
