This is in addition to the $376,000 in funding secured by Congressman Higgins through the House Energy and Water bill announced just last week.

Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives to pass H.R. 1139, the COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) Reauthorization Act. The legislation, cosponsored by Higgins, will put 50,000 more police officers on our nation’s streets, including an estimated 4,822 additional officers in New York State. It authorizes $1.25 billion a year for COPS hiring grants, $350 million a year for COPS technology grants, and $200 million a year for hiring community prosecutors.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Brian Higgins, during a personal meeting urged Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan to support the Community Regeneration, Sustainability, and Innovation Act of 2009, and choose Buffalo as one of 30 cities nation-wide to be selected for a pilot program to fight the blight of vacant housing. During the meeting Schumer and Higgins also requested that Sec. Donovan ensure that any HUD grant program designed to fight vacant housing through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act be applicable to abandoned properties and not just houses that have been foreclosed upon. This qualifies many more structures in Western New York as eligible for federal funding, as the region has a large number of abandoned, but not foreclosed, properties. An additional $2 billion in Recovery Act funds will be given out in grants to cities that face vacant housing problems.

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined the American Cancer Society in issuing a “Road To Recovery Challenge.” The goal of the project is to recruit 50 new volunteer drivers for the American Cancer Society’s service program. “Road to Recovery” links patients in need of a ride to cancer treatments with volunteers willing to donate their time and the use of their car to provide free transportation.

On Saturday, April 18 2009, Congressman Brian Higgins and Assemblyman Mark Schroeder will kick off Earth Week 2009 with a beach sweep lead by Hands On Greater Buffalo, WNY AmeriCorps, and Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper at Gallagher Beach at 8:30am. Volunteers will arrive at 8:30am for the short reception before spreading across the beach and ridding it of debris and litter, creating a safe environment for beach goers. The Gallagher Beach Sweep will complete 12 noon.
