Congressman Higgins Announces Winners of Student Art Competition

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced the winners of the annual Congressional art competition, “An Artistic Discovery.” The competition, initiated in 1982, includes hundreds of thousands of high school students from across the nation. One piece from each congressional district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building. The winning students are invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony in Washington, DC on June 24, 2009.

Congressman Higgins, Mayor Brown & Senator Schumer Announce Inner Harbor Infrastructure Improvements Through Federal Stimulus Funds

Mayor Byron W. Brown, Congressman Brian Higgins & Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that $17.6 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act have been approved for the Buffalo Sewer Authority’s planning, design and construction of the Hamburg Drain Control Facility, which collects and processes input from twenty sewer regulators within the Hamburg drain system. The federal stimulus funds will be matched with $8.8 million from the Buffalo Sewer Authority.

Erie Canal Harbor Summer Programming Schedule Announced

Today U.S. Congressman Brian Higgins, Mayor Byron Brown and County Executive Chris Collins, in conjunction with the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) and Buffalo Place Inc., officially unveiled plans for daily summer programming at the harbor site. The extensive schedule will consist of various children’s activities, cultural re-enactments, historical lectures, educational seminars, guided canal district tours, live music, an indie market, kayak and bicycles rentals, adaptive water sports, sailing classes, as well as concerts and other special events. In addition, the Erie Canal Harbor site will once again host a major Independence Day celebration and fireworks display, featuring local live musical talent and a patriotic atmosphere.

House Approves Lee/Slaughter/Higgins Amendment Requiring Independent, Comprehensive Review of Commercial Airline Pilot Training Programs

The U.S. House of Representatives today approved an amendment introduced by Congressman Chris Lee (NY-26), Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-28), and Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) that initiates an independent, comprehensive review of all commercial airline pilot training and certification programs. The amendment was included in H.R. 915, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2009.

Higgins Votes to Protect Consumers from Unfair Credit Card Practices

Congressman Higgins Announces $700,000 in Recovery Act Funding for WNY Passport Office

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that Western New York will receive $700,000 in Recovery Act funding to support the opening of a regional passport agency in Western New York. Congressman Higgins and Congressman Chris Lee (NY-26) first advocated for a WNY passport office in a letter sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on March 26th. Just days ago, standing near the Peace Bridge, Reps. Higgins and Lee announced the State Department has agreed with their request and will begin the process of establishing a passport agency locally.
