Congressman Higgins Joins Mayor Brown to Announce Improvements At Cazenovia Park With Elected Leaders And Homegrown Hockey Stars
Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that the city recently completed a $200,000 capital improvement project at three major Cazenovia park facilities in South Buffalo. Joining the Mayor at the announcement were Congressman Brian Higgins, Erie County Legislator Tim Kennedy and two of South Buffalo’s greatest homegrown athletes, Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and Tim Kennedy of the Buffalo Sabres.
“These are vitally important public facilities for the residents of South Buffalo and my Administration is committed to ensuring that they get the capital improvements that will make them welcoming for everyone that uses them and, above all else, safe,” said Mayor Brown. “Since 2006, we have invested over $3 million in city capital and bond funds in these three buildings along with other nearby facilities like the Caz Ball Diamond Shelter House, the Caz Resource Center, Crotty Casino and the Caz Park Compressor House. Their maintenance and upkeep are important to the quality of life of the residents who use these facilities all year long.”
Congressman Brian Higgins said, “Some of my fondest childhood memories include playing hockey with the kids from the neighborhood at Caz Rink in the days before the ice was covered. These facilities provide so much more than recreation, they help instill character traits that last a lifetime like self discipline, teamwork, and respect. These are the traits that have led to the great success of Buffalo’s own Patrick Kane, Tim Kennedy and thousands of others who have grown from the lessons learned here. Now thousands of new kids from the neighborhood will have the same opportunity thanks to Mayor Brown’s continued investments that keep these centers thriving.”
"This complex is such an important part of South Buffalo, and the improvements to the hockey rink and community center will ensure that future generations have the same great memories of this spot that everyone before them did," said Assemblyman Schroeder. "Whether it serves as a starting block for NHL dreams, or a safe place to hang out after school, this place will continue to be crucial to the youth of South Buffalo thanks to Mayor Brown's commitment to South Buffalo."
"Patrick Kane and Tim Kennedy are two perfect examples of what can happen to neighborhood kids when provided the resources to succeed," stated Legislator Tim Kennedy. "This major investment into the community center, pool, and ice rink will allow South Buffalonians of all ages to continue enjoying and taking advantage of these wonderful community institutions."
The work, funded through city bond funds, included the following upgrades:
Thomas Burvid Ice Rink: new forced air furnace to heat locker rooms, new hot water tanks, new energy efficient interior and exterior lighting, replaced doors at Cazenovia Street entrance, painted all other exterior doors and replaced broken concrete at various locations around the facility.
