Congressman Higgins Announces Opportunity for Local Fire Companies to Apply for Recovery Act Grants
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced the opportunity for local fire companies to apply for grants to assist with the construction or modification of fire stations. The grants are available thanks to $210 million in federal Recovery Act funds approved by Congress for the Fire Station Construction (FSC) Grant Program.
“This Recovery Act funding will provide fire companies with additional resources to upgrade their facilities toward the goal of improved safety and response services,” said Congressman Higgins. “I encourage Western New York departments to apply for these grants which in the short term will create local construction jobs and in the long term result in better protected neighborhoods.”
Applications will be available online through the Assistance to Fire Grant (AFG) program website: https://www.firegrantsupport.com/afscg/ beginning on June 8, 2009. Completed applications must be submitted before 5:00pm on July 10, 2009. All applications are submitted to the Department of Homeland Security and go through a non-partisan, merit based review ranked by factors established by a panel of service professionals.
For additional details on the process, firefighters can access the program guidance at: https://www.firegrantsupport.com/docs/2009AFSCGguidance.pdf. The Congressman is also distributing these materials to stations in his district.
These Recovery Act fire grants are in addition to the $565 million in Assistance to Firefighters grants announced earlier this year.
