Congressman Higgins Announces nearly $1 million for Cheektowaga Central School District
Congressman Brian Higgins joined Cheektowaga School Superintendent Dennis Kane to announce a $990,000 federal grant for the Cheektowaga Central School District. The district will receive $330,000 over three years through the U.S. Department of Education to be used for elementary school counseling programs.
“Education is one of the most powerful tools we can give our children” said Congressman Higgins “but in order to succeed academically, a child must also have a strong support system for social and emotional issues. This funding is critical to ensuring that this support system is not only present in our schools but is of the highest quality.”
The Cheektowaga Central School District was one of only five school districts in New York State and one of 41 school districts nationwide to receive grant money through the Department of Education’s Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Programs.
The grant funds will be used to hire four additional counselors to serve the elementary schools in the district and implement a variety of evidence-based programs to address overall behavioral health.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Elementary & Secondary School Counseling Programs provides grants on a competitive basis to districts that demonstrate need and propose the most promising and innovated approaches to expanding counseling services.
