Congressman Higgins Announces Emergency Readiness Grant for Cheektowaga Schools
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that Cheektowaga Central School District has been awarded a $98,745 grant from the US Department of Education through the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Program.
“It is so important to continuously look at how we can enhance measures that keep our children safe during difficult situations,” said Congressman Higgins. “Through this grant teachers are better equipped, children are better protected, parents are better in informed and law enforcement agencies are better prepared thanks to advanced coordination and planning.”
This grant program enables school districts to improve plans that address emergency management at all phases ranging from prevention and preparedness to response and recovery. The funding will support efforts by the school to create a plan that includes: training school personnel on emergency management procedures; communicating with parents about emergency plans and procedures; and coordinating with local law enforcement, public safety or emergency management, public health, and mental health agencies and local government.
Board of Education member Mr. Brian Gould said, "This funding will provide our district with the means to strengthen our ties with local emergency management professionals in a combined effort to help keep our schools a safe place for our employees to work and our students to learn." Cheektowaga Central School District Superintendent Mrs. Delia Bonenberger added, “We are excited about this opportunity to further develop our emergency prevention and preparedness. It is a great next step for the District.”
Approximately 2,400 students attend either the high school, middle school or two elementary schools that make up the Cheektowaga Central School District.
