Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that East Aurora Fire Control will receive $493,518 in federal Homeland Security funding in the twenty third round of Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program (AFGP) awards for fiscal year 2008. Funds will be used to upgrade communications equipment at six fire departments that are part of East Aurora Fire Control: the East Aurora Fire Department, Elma Fire Company, South Wales Fire Company, Wales Center Fire Company, West Falls Fire Company, and Holland Fire Company.

The lawmakers have been fighting to bring a passport office to Western New York as part of a months-long effort to help ease the implementation of new travel requirements that go into effect on June 1st.

With the next phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) set to go into effect on June 1, Congressmen Chris Lee (NY-26) and Brian Higgins (NY-27) are continuing to urge Washington to open a passport office in Western New York. The lawmakers joined forces this week to ask the State Department to shed light on the process by which issuance agency sites are selected. They say that “complete transparency” is critical to providing Western New Yorkers with “a complete understanding of how – and more importantly, when – a passport agency will be placed in Western New York.”

Congressman Brian Higgins announced that two agencies in Chautauqua County will receive $740,000 in state and federal funds for programs aimed at enhancing and stabilizing Chautauqua County communities.  Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corp will receive $490,000 and Chautauqua Opportunities Inc. will be awarded $250,000 through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

The effort, funded by a $500,000 grant through the New York State Community Enhancement Facilities Assistance Program and a $125,000 match from the City of Buffalo, involves the repair and replacement of neighborhood sidewalks and curbs.
