Canalside @ 10: Here’s What’s Happening Next

This summer, we celebrate 10 years since the opening of Canalside, which represented a new era for Buffalonians and Western New Yorkers yearning for public access to their waterfront. Since the New York Power Authority Settlement in 2005 which made possible all of the developments since, Canalside has become a year-round attraction, with 1.5 million visitors in 2016 alone. This milestone allows us to look at how far we’ve come, and what lies ahead:

Statement by Congressman Brian Higgins on the Arrest of Rep. Collins

“The allegations included in the indictment against Rep. Chris Collins can be summed up in one word: shameful.

“These charges, including insider trading, conspiracy to commit fraud, and lying to federal officials, laid out by professionals within the Justice Department and FBI are backed up by comprehensive evidence of these very serious offenses.

“I am confident that, in due course, justice will be served.”

Congressman Higgins Announces August Congress on Your Corner Schedule

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced the Congress on Your Corner schedule for the month of August. Through the program, staff from Congressman Higgins’ office are available at satellite sites throughout the district to better serve the needs of constituents.

Statement by Congressman Brian Higgins on on Canadian Newsprint Tariffs Reduction

Congressman Brian Higgins released the following statement regarding the Commerce Department's reduction of Candian Newsprint tariffs: 

 

"The tariffs imposed on Canadian Newsprint by the US Commerce Department have already had a negative impact on local newspapers in New York and across the country. While the decision by the Commerce Department to lower the maximum tariffs from 32% to just over 20% represents a small move in the right direction, it does not go far enough to ease the burden the newspaper industry is facing.

 

Modernization of VA Western New York Healthcare System

Buffalo, NY —VA Western New York Healthcare System is celebrating the renovation of inpatient unit 9D on Wednesday, August 1 at 10am at 3495 Bailey Avenue in Buffalo with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The renovation project completely updated 10,932 square feet for inpatient care totaling $3.9 million. The twenty bed unit features sixteen private rooms and two double rooms. Included in the project is the updating of all utility systems to support state of the art health care, increased patient comfort and energy efficiency.

Residents Devoted to Community Service Inducted into the Niagara Falls Volunteer Hall of Fame

On Monday, July 23, 2018, several local residents who have demonstrated an extraordinary lifetime commitment to service were inducted into the Niagara Falls Volunteer Hall of Fame.  Volunteer Hall of Fame candidates were nominated by the public and selected by a committee of past Hall of Fame inductees.  2018 honorees include: Marge Gillies, Bill Bradberry, Matthew and Yvonne Davis, and Josi Fera.  

 

Lackawanna's Lincoln Street School Demolition Clears the Way for Redevelopment

ERIE COUNTY, NY— Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz and Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) today joined City of Lackawanna Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski and elected officials at the site of the former Lincoln School in Lackawanna to observe the final stages of the nearly 100-year- old building’s demolition to make way for new development in the City’s first ward.
