Driving Directions
Many people have contacted our office and asked about the best way to drive from Buffalo to Washington DC. With a number of staff members who prefer driving to flying, our office has a great deal of experience in this area.
Now for the disclaimers: these directions are only suggestive in nature, and are based upon the experiences of people who have used this route. There are surely other ways to drive between Buffalo and Washington DC, and commercial websites and other resources are available for folks to find those alternative routes.
Also, this office always advises that it is best to take routes well known to the driver and/or passengers during inclement weather. The routes linked to this page are effective ways to drive between Buffalo and Washington DC during periods of good weather.
All of that said, on to the directions:
BUFFALO, NY TO CANNON HOUSE OFFICE BUILDING, WASHINGTON DC
- Depart downtown Buffalo, NY via I-190 southbound to I-90 westbound.
- Take I-90 westbound to US-219 southbound.
- Remain on US-219 southbound through:
- Springville, NY
- Ellicottville, NY
- Salamanca, NY (US-219 merges briefly with I-86 eastbound)
- Limestone, NY (US-219 breaks away from I-86)
- PA state line
- Bradford, PA
- Ridgeway, PA
- Turn left (east) onto PA Route 153.
- Go from Rt. 153 to I-80 eastbound.
- Take exit for PA Route 970 and proceed south on Rt. 970 to US- 322. Turn left onto US-322.
- Take US-322 through Philipsburg to PA Route 350. WATCH SIGNS VERY CAREFULLY IN PHILIPSBURG. Take Rt. 350 in a southeasterly direction.
- Rt. 350 eventually becomes I-99. Take I-99 south to the Pennsylvania Turnpike – I-70/I-77. Take PA Turnpike east toward Breezewood, PA.
- At Breezewood PA, take I-70 south toward Frederick, MD & I-270.
- At I-270, proceed south toward I-495, Washington DC.
- From I-270, merge onto I-495 South (toward Tyson’s Corner). This is the Capitol Beltway.
- After crossing the Potomac River from Maryland into Virginia, take the first exit onto the George Washington Memorial Parkway South. The Parkway runs through the woods along the Potomac River.
- Take the exit for I-395 N (Washington). Stay to the right as you cross the 14th Street Bridge over the Potomac. After crossing the river, take the right fork to stay on I-395.
- Take the right exit for U.S. House of Representatives. The exit forks; stay in the left lane of the exit, following the signs for C St. SW and the U.S. House of Representatives.
- At the top of the ramp, turn left onto Washington Ave SW, and thereafter turn right onto Independence Ave SW. Proceed up Independence Avenue to the House Office Buildings (right hand side). Cannon House Office Building is at corner of Independence Avenue and New Jersey Avenue.
